What pre-loading does

Pre-loading downloads and installs the game's files ahead of release, so you can start playing the moment it unlocks. It is not early access. The game stays locked until it unlocks, and Microsoft's Xbox documentation says the same about pre-orders in general: customers can download the package early but cannot launch it before the release date.

GTA Intel adds that Take-Two's Strauss Zelnick has said no edition grants early access, so the Ultimate Edition does not get you in sooner.

Rockstar gave a date for pre-load, Nov 12, but not a clock time. When exactly the game unlocks is a separate, still unconfirmed question. Our unlock-time converter shows the reported times in your own time zone.

Check your storage first

Rockstar has not published an official download size. The figure going around for PS5 is about 210 GB. It comes from an anonymous X account that reportedly reads PlayStation Store data, so treat it as reported, not confirmed. GameRant notes that it is not a ceiling and that later updates are more likely to grow the install than shrink it. No Xbox Series X/S size has surfaced, officially or otherwise.

What you can check today is how much room your console has. GTA Intel lists these usable-storage figures:

ConsoleUsable storage
PS5 (base model)667 GB
PS5 Slimabout 842 GB
PS5 Proabout 1.89 TB
Xbox Series X802 GB
Xbox Series S, 512 GB model364 GB
Xbox Series S, 1 TB modelover 800 GB

GTA Intel singles out owners of the 512 GB Series S as the ones who should clear space first. Delete or archive what you no longer play now, rather than on Nov 12.

Pre-load on PS5

  1. Pre-order the digital edition on PlayStation Store. Sony's help page says you are charged when you select Pre-Order, and the pre-order then appears in your Library.
  2. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet so the console can download while it rests. Go to Settings > System, select Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, then turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
  3. Check auto-download for GTA 6. Open Game Library, select GTA 6, then select the countdown timer. If the checkbox next to the content is ticked, auto-download is on.
  4. On Nov 12, let it run. Sony says a pre-order with automatic downloads set up starts downloading as soon as the content is available. If it has not started when you expect, open GTA 6 in your Game Library and check its status.
  5. Wait for the unlock. Once the files are installed you still cannot play until the game unlocks.

Pre-load on Xbox Series X/S

  1. Pre-order or buy the digital edition from your console's store, or redeem a boxed code (see below).
  2. Turn on automatic downloads on your console.
  3. Leave the console in Sleep rather than fully shutting it down, so it can keep downloading. GTA Intel gives this advice for the pre-load.
  4. On Nov 12, check that the download has started. Microsoft's documentation says pre-order customers can download the published package ahead of release, but cannot launch it until the release date.

We have not listed Xbox menu paths, because we could not verify the current wording. Menu names change between updates, so check Xbox Support for the exact path to power and download settings.

Boxed copies

A boxed copy does not contain a disc. Rockstar says the box holds a download code, and that the code supports pre-loading too. Physical copies are available from Nov 12. On PS5, Push Square says you redeem the code on PlayStation Store to get the digital game.

GTA Intel points out two consequences. You still download the entire game, so the storage advice above applies to you. And a late delivery shortens your pre-load window, so order early or plan to collect in store. Only the Standard Edition comes in a box. The Ultimate Edition is digital-only.

Editions and prices

Rockstar announced US prices on June 24, 2026. The Standard Edition costs $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition $99.99. The Ultimate Edition adds an exclusive collection of vehicles, weapons, apparel and more. It does not unlock the game earlier. Game Informer also reports that pre-orders and purchases before Nov 20 include the Vintage Vice City Pack. We have only verified the US prices for both editions, so we have not listed prices for other countries.
